Body Image Issues, Disordered Body Behaviors & Perfectionism: Robyn Wright's Story Pt. 1 | 015

What happens when something that looks like discipline on the outside is actually being driven by shame, fear, and a desperate need for control?

In this deeply honest conversation, former competitive bodybuilder Robyn Wright shares how childhood chaos, grief, rejection, and a performance-based identity contributed to years of body dysmorphia, bulimia, restrictive eating, and an unhealthy pursuit of thinness. Even after encountering Jesus, Robyn found herself living between two worlds — wanting God’s freedom while continuing to return to patterns that left her feeling trapped, ashamed, and powerless.

Robyn shares the turning point that came when she stopped asking Jesus merely to rescue her from the consequences of her choices and surrendered to Him as Lord, Father, Friend, and Lover of her soul. Although she experienced an immediate deliverance from bulimia, God continued leading her through a longer journey of renewing her identity, healing her relationship with food, and learning to care for her body from love rather than fear.

Together, Robyn and Leneé explore the difference between healthy stewardship and body obsession, why strict food rules can create a false sense of control, and how slowing down with the Holy Spirit can uncover the unmet needs beneath our behaviors. This conversation offers hope that you are not too far gone, too late, or too deeply trapped for God to begin leading you toward freedom.

This Episode Is for You If...

  • You feel as though food, exercise, weight, or appearance has more power over you than you want it to.

  • You are highly disciplined on the outside but recognize that fear, shame, or control may be driving your choices.

  • You repeatedly return to behaviors you have prayed about, repented of, or promised yourself you would stop.

  • You struggle to believe you are lovable, beautiful, or valuable unless your body looks a certain way.

  • You move between rigid restriction and feeling out of control with food.

  • You want to care for your health without turning food, fitness, or thinness into an idol.

  • You are ready to explore the deeper emotional and spiritual needs beneath your habits with curiosity and compassion.

What You’ll Learn

  • How childhood chaos, shame, grief, and rejection can shape our relationship with our bodies.

  • Why achievement, discipline, fitness, and even “healthy” habits can become tools for earning love or creating control.

  • The difference between knowing Jesus as Savior and surrendering to Him as Lord, Father, Friend, and Lover of your soul.

  • Why immediate deliverance from a behavior may still be followed by a longer process of renewing your identity and beliefs.

  • How black-and-white labels such as “good food” and “bad food” can reinforce perfectionistic thinking.

  • Why slowing down creates space to recognize whether your hunger is physical, emotional, relational, or spiritual.

  • How to use the H.A.L.T. method to identify what you may truly need before automatically reaching for food.

  • What it can look like to pursue health from love, wisdom, freedom, and Kingdom purpose rather than fear or thinness.

A Practical Tool: The H.A.L.T. Method

Before automatically reaching for food, pause and ask:

H — Am I hungry?
Is the hunger physical, emotional, or spiritual?

A — Am I anxious or angry?
Food may temporarily distract you, but it cannot resolve anxiety or anger.

L — Am I lonely?
You may need connection, comfort, prayer, or honest conversation.

T — Am I tired?
Your body may be asking for rest rather than more stimulation or food.

As Robyn explains, unmet needs can feel like insatiable hunger. Slowing down allows you to become present with the Holy Spirit, listen to your body, and respond to yourself with love rather than punishment.

Five Foundations of Faithfully Living Fit

Robyn identifies five natural foundations that support deeper health:

  1. Eating minimally processed foods most of the time.

  2. Choosing the quality and quantity of food that appropriately supports your individual body.

  3. Staying adequately hydrated.

  4. Moving your body regularly in ways you genuinely enjoy.

  5. Managing stress and prioritizing restorative sleep.

These foundations are not another perfectionistic checklist. You do not have to overhaul every area at once. Freedom grows as you compassionately and progressively take the next wise step God places in front of you.
